Molly Matalon

Where are you from/based now?

I'm from Boca Raton Florida. At this moment I am in Brooklyn, NY and in the next few days moving to San Francisco, CA!


What is your background in Photography? What keeps you interested?

In May I graduated from the School of Visual Arts with a BFA in photography. I get hyped on different sides of photography all the time. I'm interested in it being a complex medium that people pass off as simple.


What equipment do you use?

I use a Mamiya RZ67 + a Contax t2


What do you look for when you are out shooting?

I couldn't tell you until it reveals itself


How often do you go out shooting?

I usually "go out shooting" when i'm out of town or on small trips with my friends. It's been really rare for me to go out in nyc and walk around shooting.


Is there a particular photographer, site, set of images or a photo book that you keep coming back to for inspiration?

All of my fam! Corey Olsen, Caroline Tompkins, Zak Krevitt, Tim Schutsky, Jake Sigl, Patrick O'Malley, Claire Christerson, Logan Jackson, Thomas McCarty, Matt Holmes. Some of my favorite photo books are Eleanor by Harry Callahan, Vanilla Partner by Torborn Rodland, Pictures from Home by Larry Sultan, I'm sure I'm forgetting some.....obviously also Broken Manual by Alec Soth.


Are you working on a project at the moment?

Yes! I've been traveling and making pictures with/of my best friend Damien Maloney


Could you tell us a bit about your current exhibition and if you have any plans to exhibit more in the near future.

Right now I am in a group show called "7 on Main Street" in Madrid, Spain at Combustion Espontanea. With works by Corey Olsen, Caroline Tompkins, Jake Sigl, Zak Krevitt, Tim Schutsky, Patrick O'Malley and myself. It's a result of a critique class we put together led by Joseph Maida.
