Andrew Jensen

Where are you from/based now?

I’m 23, born in Lansing, Michigan. Currently I’m writing this from Marquette, Michigan, and in several weeks moving to Traverse City, Michigan. Brooklyn in the fall perhaps…

What is your background in Photography? What got you started?

After high school my twin brother and I took a year off of school, before going to college, and worked as ski bums in Montana. While we were there I began photographing my brother skiing with a Nikon D40. Although these images were nothing like the subjects I shoot now I think that is where my passion for photography began.

What equipment do you use?

Mamiya 7ii exclusively, but I want so bad to get a 4x5, or maybe a RB67. I need to get a job first.

What are your feelings on Film Vs Digital?

I like film better.

Do you have a creative process? Are your shots planned or spontaneous?

Before shooting I’ll have a general idea of where I might go and what I might find there, but usually I don’t find what I was looking for, and settle for something else. So spontaneous I guess.

Who or what inspires you?

People younger than me doing way bigger things.

Is there a particular photographer, site, set of images or a photo book that you keep coming back to for inspiration?

I always go back to Ed Panar’s site; he is one of my favorites. I also really enjoy Ron Jude or Jason Fulford. I got to meet Alec Soth this past fall. His work is obviously hugely inspirational.

Are you working on a project at the moment?

I like to work around phrases that relate to my current state in life. Right now that phrase is “You’re On Your Own” so maybe some images based around that idea.
